Over the years the dependency on cloud storage is on the rise. Cloud storage services like Google Drive, Box, OneDrive, Nextcloud, and etc has been providing quality services for users. Owncloud is one out of the pack that provides a self-hosted open-source platform for users to sync files while being absolutely in control.

Just like Nextcloud, Owncloud is hosted on the Linux server and to install Owncloud, you’ll need to run a PHP command on your device. In this article, we’ll demonstrate how to download and install it using SSH [secure shell] commands.

How to Install Owncloud using ssh commands – the guide

1. Secure shell commands is a cryptographic network protocol that enables a user to gain a secure connection. You can learn how to set it up on the DreamHost platform.

2. Now after, you’ve set up the SSH user profile, you’ll have to enable the PHP intl extension. This extension will aid you to download and set up OwnCloud on any device it is enabled.

3. Alright, once you’re done with 1 and 2 above, it is time now to go into the big deal. Head to the Owncloud download page. While on the page scroll down and right-click on the ‘download tar’ option to copy the link.

4. Next, go to your SSH server, [the one you’ve created at the beginning of this guide] select a choice directory and type “wget” command then paste the link close to it.

5. Now, go back to the download page and look below the download button, right-click on ‘Sha256’ and copy the link.

6. Come to your server and run the ‘wget’ command and paste the link beside it as above.

7. Verify the links against each other and confirm it. Usually, if it is correct, it will display ‘OK’ at the end of the command.

8. At this point, it is time to decompress, run the commands below to decompress it.

9. Now got to your browser and search for the Owncloud folder. once it appears, create a unique username and password. Then scroll down and click ‘Finish Setup’
