The research as carried out by Zachary Yorke – a UX researcher at Google, revealed that video meetings make conversations appear impersonal and robotic due to the lack of physical eye contact.

1. Keep it slow, do not talk too fast

You easily notice it when a sound from someone’s mouth takes more than half a second to reach your ear, this is called the millisecond’s effect. This delay can mess up our conversations over the cyberspace.

However, if you can keep it slow while on a video conference meeting, it will help all the parties involved. Hence, you can add virtual bumps as you speak on Zoom meetings or Houseparty conversations.

2. Give room for informal Small talks

Do not be too formal during cloud meetings, this can make the conversation boring. Making time for personal connections will increase rapport and help team members get along with each other easily. Yorke opined that creating personal connections makes meetings feel good and yields increase productivity.

3. Hop on Visual cues

In real life conversation, visual cue is paramount. You can notice individuals interest by the way they lean forward and through eye contacts. With this you get clue about their emotions and you can pause to address any confusion or skepticism. The absence of direct eye contact in video meetings make communication a bit difficult.

Therefore, while in a video meeting resist the urge to look at the tabs on your browser and focus more on participants. Hop on the least visual cue and keep it natural just as in real life.

4. Recognize individuals differences

Every body have a different approach to work, it is true that it can be frustrating but different ways of working will improve productivity. Yorke in his analysis suggests that colleagues should recognize and compliment each others weakness. Therefore as a team you must not stick on your differences rather have open conversation about your preferred working styles.

5. Let the proverbial Talking stick rotate

Generally, during real life conversation the contributions by participant is less likely to be rational. While, others may be taking active role in the conversation some team members take more passive role. Now, talking over the screen makes it even more difficult for some participants to raise their voice.

Yorke suggests that one vital communication tool over the cyberspace is to remind and encourage participants to “step out of their shell and share the floor”. Individual contribution in a video meetings balances every conversation.
